No. One. Has. No. Idea. How. Much. I. Procrastinated!
I worked on this while I was still in school before I got into my break, and before I went to Japan so that was summer... and that was like a month into the sketch so YEA that was a while back when I started on it. I worked on it on and off until yesterday when I finally told my self to just suck it and finish it up. My initial plan was to actually put it into Painter and shade it with a more rough painting style than usual but while I was coloring in the base color I thought the flat coloring suited this particular piece so I decided to not bother with it. Easier for the eyes too. Also I spent the whole day trying to balance out the colors. Just because it's simple doesn't mean it's easy. So yea, just a random chick in my main style which I don't use as often as I should. I absolutely love drawing sunflowers. I love drawing plant life in general but it's something about sunflowers that has this weird hypnotic, seductive, intriguing... beauty to it? Yea I can't explain it. Now I look at it more closely I think the red is very lopsided to the left? Hmm... Character, Story & Artwork is © Sires R. Black and ©BlackStarr513® All Rights Reserved. First of all, I think the idea itself is really cool, probably because sunflowers are my favorite kind of flora. xDDD But here's the thing, I'm actually working on an overdue piece that involves sunflowers, and every time I look for drawn reference I always see the bright yellow sunflowers, not that it's a bad thing, but I just rarely see them in a different color, which makes this so unique. And I really agree with you about the flat colors, it looks absolutely gorgeous here! Although you did mention that getting these colors was not at the least bit easy, it's really nice that the 'blood' is a sort of pink color, but it shows up very well against the desaturated turquoises. I do think the image is rather imbalanced and although I really really like this piece, it kinda makes me un-easy, like it feels like something's missing. D: For one thing, all the red is concentrated on the left side of the image. The left side also has more irregular shapes or jagged edges as opposed to the right side that has the smooth and round stems of the sunflowers. I think one way that can be fixed is by extending the stems, so that there's a bit more negative space between her back and the stems/leaves. Or maybe if you added another flower or something that's red there? Her hair also makes the right edge feel slightly crowded, so widening the canvas there may help the composition too. One last thing, maybe it's because of the greys, but the lineart on the stems/leaves don't stand out very well and all that beautiful detail gets kind of lost. So maybe thickening or changing the colors there by a tad would do the trick? Anyhow, I really really like the whole thing and I love your art, so I'm always happy to see that you've updated something. XDDD -- -- ( ゚д゚ ) (´▽`*) O口O ●口● 囧rz *BloodScale is da Alright, so i feel a little awkward commenting on this, seeing as you want 'advanced critique', and I wouldn't dream of ever putting myself in the catagory of people who are any good at this, but I also realize that not commenting wouldn't allow me to say how much I love this.
So, first of all, you have my utter admiration for being able to find the correct colour red to go with that green. You may have spent all day on it, but I think it was worth it. It's just vibrant enough to really pop, but not so much that it hurts (you know, when colours seem to vibrate and they make you squint). The hair is absolutely beautiful. It's so delicate, and helps to keep you eye in the picture, as well as leading your eye around (supported by the rest of the composition). The little flip flops are a nice touch, the keep the sunflowers from making the picture too top heavy (if that makes sense) and on top of that, they make me smile. I'm glad you didn't shade it, it might have taken too much attention away from the elegant line work you're done. (I wish i could do outlines like that...) All in all, I'm looking for something to critique, but really, I can't; it's just an all round great picture. I'm just wondering about one thing, did you use paths for her hair? I hope that wasn't too terrible of a read... |
